Green River is different from a lot of American community colleges because it offers on-campus housing for many of its international students. Some students live with host families or get their own apartments, but the Campus Corner Apartments (CCA), where I live, is close to my classes and a gathering place for a lot of students. That means I’ve been close to some great events on campus the last few weeks.

Block party at  the Campus Corner Apartments
Last week we had another resident appreciation week at the Campus Corner Apartments. Every quarter, the resident assistants at CCA organize an entire week dedicated to us, the residents. It is a week full of fun events you can participate at with your friends and neighbors. The events ranged from ‘build your own cupcake’ all the way to ‘origami night’.
Thursday that week, the whole neighborhood was part of our block party. The band that had been hired played their music so loud that even the students on campus could enjoy it.

While some students were only there to enjoy the free food, others were busy creating a special piece of art by popping balloons filled with paint or by spilling paint on a rotating piece of paper. I myself created a rather disturbing painting and participated in games like eating donuts of a chain without using your hands and the cake circle.
The event originally included a dunk tank as well but it was cancelled due to bad weather earlier in the week. I was really looking forward to dunking my own RA, Janelle. Because the sun was actually shining that day, some residents decided to take matters in to their own hands. They filled up some water balloons but instead of participating, the RAs promised us that they will create a water balloon event for the last week of this quarter.

We the Kings come to Green River

A few weeks ago, our school hosted We The Kings, a band originating from Florida. I knew the band so I was one of the first to sign up. The event was set to start at 7pm on Friday, the doors would be opened at 6pm but due to some problems, we didn’t get in untill 6.45pm. Once we were inside we were treated to a great performance by one of our student bands. After that the opening group Imagine Dragon took stage and got the whole audience jumping and singing. I had never heard of them before so I didn’t know what to expect but it was a very pleasant surprise. I really liked their music and apparently the audience did too.

After another performance of one of our students and a very long sound check, finally We The Kings arrived on stage and the crowd went wild. Their songs were very nice and I enjoyed their performance a lot. They are one of those bands that stayed on the ground and know how lucky they are. They connected very well with the students and got them dancing, screaming, and laughing. It was a great evening.
